Swiss Ambassador to China Bernardino Regazzoni (third from left) and then Vice Minister of Housing and Urban-Rural Development Ni Hong (second from right) signed the MoU.

Globally, the building sector generates around a third of greenhouse gas emissions. In China, rapid urbanisation and economic growth has been accompanied by rapid growth in the building sector and associated emissions. National efforts to address emissions arising from construction and use of buildings have included new standards for building energy efficiency and emissions.

To address the challenge of mitigating building sector emissions, the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs and China’s Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development (MoHURD) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on November 24, 2020, to strengthen cooperation in building energy efficiency. The MoU enhances cooperation between Switzerland and China in energy-efficient and zero-emission building technologies, supporting improved standards demonstration projects, and coordinated efforts to address building sector emissions.
