The Gongchen Community Center in Fangshan District, Beijing, designed by Prof. Yehao Song of SUP Atelier, is a pioneering zero-emission building (ZEB) that achieves carbon neutrality in both construction and operation. Its core feature is a Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) system embedded in the roof and façade, producing more electricity annually than the building consumes. Energy efficiency is further enhanced by high-performance insulation, advanced windows, a heat pump system for reliable heating and cooling, and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery, supported by natural airflow through skylights.
Beyond operational energy, the project addresses embodied carbon by using recycled materials such as reclaimed pipes and wood, while limiting concrete to reduce emissions. Passive strategies, including optimized daylighting, natural ventilation, and a flexible spatial layout, enhance comfort while lowering energy demand. Together, these measures demonstrate how design-driven solutions can achieve meaningful carbon reductions, positioning the centre as a model for sustainable architecture in cold climates.
